Do Random stuff

on . Postato in Blog

Lately I am writing a lot of tests for a new PHP framework: at the moment we passed 2800 tests, but the number will grow, since we're at about 50%. Tests were running fine, however I was wondering if there were any hidden issues due the large amount of mocked object.

The next thing to do was to run them in a random order: sadly the results were unexpected.

Joomla and Beyond 2014

on . Postato in Blog

jab 14This year, as usual, I'll attend to Joomla and Beyond, the most important conference in Europe about Joomla; it will be held in Königstein (Germany) from May 30th to June 1st.

However, this year there's a twist: I'll hold a session title Tricorder: diagnose and heal your software, without the science fiction.
In this session I'll share my experience while working with Akeeba Backup about how you can automatically analyze the logs you application is producing.

A well written log analyzer could help you providing a first level of support, avoiding a lot of tickets that could be answered by pointing the user to the manual page (the good, old, RTFM :D )

I'll upload the slides of my session as soon as they would be available.

UPDATE You can find the slides in the full page artcile

gsoc2014

That was completely unexpected but it's a great pleasure to be a mentor for the Google Summer of Code 2014.
The project proposed by my student aims to complete Unit Testing for Joomla Framework, so we will be able to spot bugs immediatly and in a automated way.

For more details I strongly suggest you to read these blog post created by the student: part 1, part 2

Flying to the Joomla World Conference!

on . Postato in News

jwc 13This year I'll attend to Joomla World Conference on November 8th - 10th 2013; the meeting will be held at Boston, MA, USA.
The location chosen is the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School (Harvard?? Really??)

This time, for the first time, I'll hold a session on a very specific topic: getting started with Unit Testing.
More specifically, I'll report my own experience writing tests for the FrameworkOnFramework library. When I started writing them, I faced a very big problem: on internet there are no step by step guides, you have to discover everything through "the hard way".

I hope my session will help some developers to retain a little of mental health during the crazy task of writing Unit Tests ;)
A video should be available, however I'll upload the slides as soon as they are ready.

UPDATE The video is still missing, however you can find the slides in the full article.
